Walking Together: Creating Caring Communities in the Hunter

In every community, there is an invisible thread that connects us. Like the mycelium that connects all living things in nature. It shows up when we walk together: literally and figuratively sharing a path, a conversation, or a common purpose. When we walk side by side, barriers fall away, and we see each other not as roles or organisations, we see each other as people with a shared vision for something greater.

This is the heart of Thriving Together – Hunter Alliance (led by Thrive Stars) : a wellbeing alliance bringing people and organisations across Lake Macquarie, Newcastle, Port Stephens and the Hunter Region into the same stride. It is about moving beyond silos and competition, and instead walking together towards thriving, resilient, and equitable communities.

From Silos to Solutions

For too long, the work of supporting communities has been done in pockets. Health services here, schools there, charities and government agencies each working hard and often apart. While the intentions are always good, the fragmentation can mean duplication in some areas and gaps in others.

Thriving Together – Hunter Alliance seeks to change that. By bringing health, education, councils, Aboriginal community-controlled organisations, marginalised and disadvantaged communities and businesses, and lived experience voices around one table, the focus shifts from isolated problem-solving to collective solution-building. Together, we can:

  • Collaborate across sectors to set shared wellbeing goals.
  • Amplify impact by aligning with regional and state strategies.
  • Build inclusion and equity, for minority and marginalised communities.
  • Measure what matters, using shared data and community voice.
  • Create caring communities, that support each other at all levels

This is about harnessing the power of “we” instead of “me.”

A Vision for a Thriving Hunter

Imagine a Hunter Region where every person, workplace, and neighbourhood has the opportunity to flourish, physically, mentally, emotionally, socially, culturally, and economically. That is the vision. And it is not just words on paper; it is an invitation to co-create a future where wellbeing is not a privilege, it is a shared foundation.

The first focus areas are practical and deeply needed: creating caring communities, supporting workforce wellbeing in the health and care sectors, strengthening place-based mental health collaboration, using digital tools to track progress, and ensuring youth, First Nations and marginalised groups and partnerships are at the centre.

Walking Towards Thriving Communities

When we walk together, we create more than pathways. We create belonging. Caring communities are not built by accident; they are shaped through intention, collaboration, and the willingness to listen and learn from one another.

The Thriving Together Alliance is not just a working group; it is a movement. It is a call for all of us in the Hunter to step into the circle, to bring our unique strengths, and to walk side by side towards a stronger, more connected, and more caring region. It is call to come together as equals and sit in circle at a round table.

Because when we walk together, we do not just get further – we thrive. It only takes the square root of 1% of the population to create change.

Rediscover your authentic self.

I deeply honour and acknowledge the Awabakal and Worimi people on whose land I was born, live and work.
I acknowledge that the energy walked here through community hunting, birthing, and living under natural laws still remains and has been laid down in the land for all to benefit from.
I acknowledge their ancestors, past and present, who love, care and respect country and their ongoing connection to the ocean, rivers, earth, rocks and air and the balance of all life.
I acknowledge the Elders emerging who take care of the Spirit of this land through connection to the old ones.
Most of all I am grateful to the wisdom and culture of all First Nations people and what we can learn walking beside eachother as we come together from all lineages who were once connected to the land as they are.
